What I've Leared: Marian Duff

What I've Leared: Marian Duff Patta

For more than three decades, Marian Duff has worked at the intersection of art, fashion, culture and community. From working in journalism and publishing to co-founding MAFB and establishing OSCAM (Open Space Contemporary Art Museum) in Amsterdam, her career has been driven by a belief in creating space for stories, talent and perspectives that too often go unseen. As OSCAM’s founding director, Duff has built a platform rooted in accessibility, representation and collective growth. For Things I’ve Learned, she reflects on trusting her instincts, investing in people and why the most meaningful creative work is rarely achieved alone.

What would I do differently?

Honestly, not much. I’ve always followed my curiosity and trusted my instincts. Whenever I felt something was missing—a story, a platform, or a space—I tried to create it together with people who shared that vision. Looking back, every chapter—from journalism, publishing, and fashion to community building to OSCAM—has taught me that the work is never about one person. It’s about building something that others can grow with.

What have I learned about creativity?

Creativity is a collective force. Ideas become meaningful when they’re shared, challenged, and shaped by different perspectives. After more than 30 years as a cultural entrepreneur, I’ve learned that my greatest role isn’t to have all the answers but to create the conditions where talented people can do their best work. That’s what I strive for every day with the OSCAM team.

What's the best advice I've received?

Invest in people. Skills can be learned, but curiosity, generosity, and integrity are what build lasting communities. The best work happens when people feel seen, trusted, and valued. I’ve been fortunate to work alongside many people who remind me of that every day.
